Enjoy a free day in historic Chur and the surrounding region.
The wild landscapes of the Graubünden region are waiting to be
discovered, with superb railway journeys available from Chur that
take you around one of Switzerland's most attractive cantons. Or
you could explore Chur itself, which as the first settlement in
Switzerland, has a wealth of history to uncover. Enjoy a stroll
though the Old Town, which harks back to medieval times, maybe
finding a quaint café to relax in.
Day 4 - The Bernina Express to Poschiavo
Today's excursion is on the panoramic Bernina Express along the
Bernina Line, passing mighty glaciers, rushing mountain streams and
flower-filled Alpine meadows. The line is over 100 years old and
has UNESCO World Heritage Status - a testament to the incredible
civil engineering required to create the line, as well as the
breathtaking scenery through which it travels. Travelling south
through tunnels hewn out of rock and over 196 bridges, including
the incredible Landwasser Viaduct, the track clings to the
mountainside as we wind above deep ravines and past idyllic
waterfalls. We emerge from the Albula Tunnel and traverse the
mighty Bernina Pass, arriving in Poschiavo in the Italian speaking
region of Switzerland. We have free time in this picturesque town
before our return journey.
Day 5 - The Glacier Express
Journeying through the craggy landscapes of the Graubünden
canton, we make our way to the fantastic sunny Valais aboard the
iconic Glacier Express - 'the slowest express train in the world'.
The entire journey is accompanied by panoramic views of the scenery
for which Switzerland is famous; sloping meadows, broad vineyards,
and dense forests rising up the hillside towards towering,
snow-capped peaks. We travel along the beautiful Rhine Valley,
climbing steadily and then steeply as we make our way up and over
the Oberalp Pass, the highest point of the route. From here, we
descend into the flourishing Rhône Valley, where vineyards line the
hillsides. Arriving in Brig, we transfer to a local railway for a
journey to Kandersteg. This resort town is surrounded by
breathtaking mountain scenery and is one of Switzerland's unspoilt
gems. We stay here for three nights.
Day 6 - To Zermatt by mountain railway
Today we visit the charming, resort of Zermatt. We travel to
Brig to join a narrow-gauge train which takes us alongside the
River Rhône to Visp. Here, we join the mountain track for the steep
ascent to Zermatt, passing charming scenery. The approach to
Zermatt takes us through eight tunnels and across 42 bridges, the
gradient of the ascent requiring cogwheels to be engaged. Finally
we reach Zermatt, nestled below the tilted peak of the instantly
recognisable Matterhorn, where you have some free time. You could
ascend to the summit of the Gornergrat by funicular railway
(payable locally), a six-mile journey that boasts the title of the
highest open-air railway on the continent.
Days 7-8 - Oeschinen Lake and London
We travel to the crisp and peaceful waters of Oeschinen Lake
near Kandersteg, cradled in the Oeschinen Valley. An oasis of calm
at the heart of the Bernese Oberland, this is Switzerland at its
pristine best. To get here, we board the Oeschinensee cable car*
which carries us up through the mountains, offering staggering
views below as we rise above the peaks. We walk from our departure
point to the lake, where you have free time to soak in the Alpine
panorama which surrounds you.
*Lake Oeschinen cable car does not operate until mid-May.
